Reflection and promotion of independent productions

In the promotion of contemporary drama, which arrived to the stable stage right from independent theater, the Theater Institute of Bratislava has considerable merit, which in 2000 founded the competition for the best Slovak Dramatic Text Award (currently Drama) to support the creation and presentation of contemporary Slovak creators on Slovak stages. In addition, over the years it has intensively published translations of existing plays, organized staged readings and has held educational cycles and workshops for Slovak creators, led by Slovak and foreign lecturers. It is the main organizer of the New Drama Festival, presenting the staging of Slovak and foreign contemporary texts on home stages or the presentation of contemporary dramaturgy and authorial independent theater. But the most important support for independent theater is the existence of the Štúdio 12 chamber stage by the Theater Institute that operates in a former recording radio studio in Bratislava, and in which the space holds authorial projects especially by young, even non-established artists.

Several journals and periodicals are dedicated to independent and alternative theater, despite the fact that not a single one deals exclusively with them. The magazine Code issued by the Theater Institute of Bratislava is a monthly theater magazine about Slovak theater and the reviews also regularly mention projects by independent ensembles. Once a year, it is also issued in English, which comprehensively summarizes the previous theatrical season. Salto and Dance magazines are primarily dedicated to dance and physical theater, published only on a quarterly basis. Stage magazine, issued by the National Tutorial Center, works mostly with amateur theater, sometimes also addresses the productions of independent ensembles. Independent theater is monitored by the program and magazine Wave, which tries to present current trends in all artistic theater and hence also theater, dance or writing for the theater. The quarterly Slovak Theater issued by the Institute of Theatre and Film Research of the Slovak Academy of Sciences is devoted to theater issues rather from a historical and theoretical point of view.
