Katarína Bajcurová undertook to enhance the specialized and professional credit of gallery and the building-up of its positive image outwardly. In 2001 she approached brave step and decided the closure of part of the object so-called “Bridge” by reason of its state in serious disrepair. A complete reconstruction of the whole Water Barracks including Dedeček´s addition to the building became a priority for following period. Bajcurová started-up these processes; already in 2005 an international competition for modernization, reconstruction and finishing of the construction has run. In that period and at the same time the gallery obtained representative exhibition premises at the level of European standard by reconstruction of adjacent Esterházy palace. The acquisition activity was enlivened the collective of specialized workers was rejuvenated to which the management made possible to experiment on field of untraditional approaches and interconnections of traditional and contemporaneous curator´s way of considering. The gallery focused an enhanced attention on work with children´s also adult visitors. New digital technologies were intensively developed and applied above all in documentation of collections.
After ten years in 2010 Katarína Bajcurová handed over the vital institution into the hands of her younger colleague Alexandra Kusá who is topical directress. Under her management the gallery goes on in installed trend she intensified yet the effort in standardization of specialized activity also trying to build and educate public. Also in limited premises and under conditions worsened by reconstruction the gallery can bring attractive events. In an attractive way the exhibitions appreciating contribution of personalities of Slovak visual art (Július Koller, Milan Adamčiak) of the 2nd half of 20th century, new nontraditional conceptions of thematic exhibitions which often concern problems resonating in society (Interrupted Song, Dream versus Reality, Drunk muse) examine and present some areas of our visual culture, art and design (Let him sew!) by a new optics sometimes also by a confrontational one that evokes discussions and they reappraise seemingly closed chapters (Slovak myth) or they utilize the digital procedures and new forms of presentation (Ritual of museum in digital age). The gallery continues in its educational activities intensively and also by new forms.
After almost 15 years from beginnings of her predecessor Alexandra Kusá succeeded to begin with the reconstruction of main object with a perspective of its termination in year 2019. The selected approach according to project of Martin Kusý and Pavol Paňák respects original architecture of Vladimír Dedeček and in principle it solves the urbanism of the area/precinct and its engagement into city structures. The gallery perceives the reconstruction not only as a repair of buildings falling into disrepair but also as a restart, an unique possibility to show what it means to be a modern gallery´s and cultural institution in 21st century not only in sense of infrastructure but also of its content specialized stock of work.
