Education of pedagogues in area of art and lifelong education

This education runs in two planes: it concerns the duly college study programmes focused on education in the artistic and art-scientific subjects on pedagogical faculties of colleges and the form of complementary pedagogical study within master´s level of study at art colleges where it concerns the voluntary study the aim of which is enlargement of qualification of graduates of artistic programmes for teaching the practical and technological subjects and theoretical subjects of area of whichever art at the basic schools, basic art schools and at all types of secondary schools.

The pedagogical faculties of particular colleges are firstly focused on teaching profession of visual art, musical and dramatic education and besides the qualified pedagogues of methodology and didactics also the renowned artists are teaching. The primary orientation already from the substance is not oriented on versatile training of performing artist but also on pedagogue of practical and theoretical subjects at primary schools, basic art schools and secondary schools.

The pedagogues of art colleges are, however, to a predominant extent the performing artists, which not have formal pedagogical education, they secure also adequate transfer of knowhow on students, topical trends in art respectively by its work, participation in research projects and by their continual increase of their qualification (doctorand study, habilitation and inauguration proceedings)

Lifelong education

The teaching of art is considered in general for necessary component of education in its classic comprehension. Although, when it is, in the present time, compulsory subject at certain levels of educational system furthermore the significant differences exist in level and content of this education. From the historical point of view the teaching of art was connected with field of upbringing of the children and youth but in the present day the viewpoint of lifelong education and development of new information and communication technologies were enlarged into area which was traditionally dedicated to art and culture and new ways of access and expressing of this sector were formed. In complex and mutually interconnected world, in which we live, constant progress of information and communication technologies stirred up also the support of society and economy based on knowledge in which therefore the intellectual capacity and creativeness occupy leading place. Therewith the meaning of task of culture and its variety was increased.

The education in area of art offers a tool for development of needed human sources focused on utilization of richness of our cultural heritage. The art is at the same time the demonstration of culture and communication means of knowledge in this field. Therefore the educational programmes within lifelong education in area of art in this sense help to people in discovering the diversity of cultural manifestation and they develop their perceptiveness against it. It may not be forgotten the thing that the art and design are a part of society development that they help to develop philosophical directions and to create new styles and artistic movements.

Incessant and rapid changes, which manifest themselves in our society, require greater adaptability, flexibility, creativeness, innovation and communication connected with growth of competitiveness. The development  of creativeness within school syllabus by means of educational programmes developed within of adequate pedagogical methods as well as the development of programmes of lifelong education not only for performing artists is very important because both have large influence on later incorporating of students into artistic and creative sector on market. The programmes of lifelong education are focused not only on the development of basic creative techniques but, above all, on enlargement of content of art education with the aim to improve working application in this sector as well as potential of artistic activity in so-called new era.

The artistic activity assumes in reality a wide spectrum of competences, knowledge and materials which are interconnected with e. g. various fields of science and engineering.

In the field of tertiary education still are absent specialized bachelor´s or master´s study programmes which would cover important professions in culture e.g. dramatic education, guardianship, management of cultural relics, galleries and museums, entrepreneurship in culture or creative industries. The education for these professions is held mostly by form of ad-hoc courses and workshops which are organized by various non-governmental organizations or colleges alone.

Within informal education and further technical education the NOC – National Educational Centre (state contributory organization of the Ministry of Culture of the SR) has its irreplaceable place which is specialized–methodical and advisory guarantor of protection and presentation of a part of intangible cultural heritage preserved in local and regional culture with accent on development of cultural and public enlightenment activity. The main pillars of activity of National Educational Centre are interest art activity, traditional folk creation, education in culture and research activity and monitoring in culture. Within activities in education in culture secure the accredited also non-accredited long-term courses which provide further education for workers of regional and local culture as well as for workers acting in area of amateur and traditional culture and art.

Within non-governmental organizations which are active within the lifelong education of workers in culture (of self-governing but also non-governmental organizations) as well as of performing artists which expand themselves by lifelong education and they increase their competences and skills; it is necessary to mention N – CSU Bratislava (Foundation – Centre of Contemporary Art,  www.ncsu.sk), which initiated several interesting educational programmes for (senior) managers of public and non-state art institutions e. g. programme financed by British Council “More closely to museum” for workers of educational departments of museums and galleries. Likewise it guided in cooperation with Academy of Arts (but also with other specialist partners) the courses focused on marketing of art, fundraising, PR in art or project management for cultural operators, managers of public and non-governmental cultural institutions and the like. In the past the foundation has also supported a number of new and emerging projects in all fields of theatre and one of largest and most complete collections of study material about contemporary fine art of Slovakia since the end of WWII is found with it.

In the area of lifelong education and in area of culture and art also foundations supported by corporate sector are acting like for instance Foundation of SPP (Slovak Gas Industry), Foundation of Tatra banka or Central European Foundation and the like. Also Fund for support of art provides great extent of support of various specialized educational activities which has separate programme for support of educational and research activities in all areas of art also in summary activities. It also supports the participation of artists and pedagogues of art colleges in educational events abroad in independent programme.
